We covered Romain Goyet’s Linux for PalmOne Tungsten E project quite some time ago. Anyways, a lot has happened there since I last checked!

First of all, there are now new images of a TE booting the kernel. Of course, the kernel still doesnt fully load, but it now displays stuff on the screen which greatly simplifies debugging.

Also, the bootloader component was forked away from the main project. It is called Garux, and now has an own website hosted at SourceForge’s. Garux is intended to act as a bootloader that leaves the Palm Os in place, but nevertheless allows to start a linux kernel.

In order to run a kernel image with Garux, you need to actually recompile it. Garux is different from normal kernel loaders, as the kernel is embedded straight into the prc file that also contains the bootloader.

I don’t currently have the time to test this out, but would be very grateful if someone would post his results here!

  1. Hi Nitron,

I’m the LifeDrive port guy. When you say locked up, did the screen just go a bit corrupted and then slowly faded to white after a while? If so then Garux was probably working and Linux should have at least started booting.

Vladimir (Farcaller) at http://hackndev.com/ reported that his T3 port boots and turns on the LCD of the Zire72 with a few minor changes.

I just took a look at the Zire72 page on handhelds.org, it does look like it has quite similar hardware to the LifeDrive. It looks like Vladimir has posted the values of the LCD registers. If you’re interested in working on it, post on the hackndev.com forum and we might be able to work something out.
