Mobileread does a double take to an old TamsPalm article

Well, a long while ago, probably over a year ago, I wrote an article describing some technology seen in the last couple CES shows. It was about quantum optical memory. It seems Mobileread has written an article about the technology this year.

Take a look:

My old article

What do you think? (Note: I am not trying to insinuate Mobileread stole my article or anything like that :))

Is SiEd dead?

The most of you should know SiEd, the probably best plain text editor for Palm OS. It was developed by Benjamin Roe. As you can see in the changelog of SiEd, the first version 0.01 was released on 14th June 2003. Then, almost every week there was a new release (often even more than one release a week). It became famous, and the project had many translators for many languages. No other comparably app had so much features: split screen (you could edit two files at the same time), many fonts, search & replace, VFS, document’s statistics etc.

On 5th March 2005, version 0.9.11 was released. Then, no update for two weeks, three weeks, … Benjamin Roe wrote that he got a job at DataViz. He wanted to continue developing but also wrote that development will slow down. Ten months later Tam Hanna wrote an article about OpenSource software on a T|E2. I sent that link to Benjamin Roe, and I asked him what happened to SiEd. So let’s quote him:

Thanks for the kind comments on your site. I put an announcement on my blog (http://benroe.com/si_blog/?p=85) about the fate of SiEd, but basically I don’t have the motivation or energy to work on it for PalmOS any more. It was a great learning experience and I was glad to be able to help the Palm community, but now I have a full time development job
and don’t use my Palm very much. Maybe one day another developer will ,come along and take over, but nobody has volunteered yet.

Ben

I never noticed his blog… But there is a post “End of an era“. He writes:

I’ve been meaning to put this up on the site for a while and an email I received today finally convinced me to do it:

SiEd for Palm is effectively dead

I haven’t used my Tungsten E once in the past six months; everything that I would have done with it, I now do on my Sony-Ericsson p910i as it is smaller, more powerful, has a better battery life and built-in internet access. When I first got the phone, I expected to carry on using the Palm, but after a few weeks the Palm got dumped in a drawer and abandoned.

It just isn’t possible to motivate myself to work on a project I know that I will never use, regardless of how many expectant users it has. (…) My plan at the moment is to port SiEd to Symbian UIQ2 and continue development there.

I’m sorry if I’ve given a false impression of progress on the project in the past, it is only recently that I have finally admitted that it’s never going to get finished. The current beta version has some HiRes+ support, so potentially somebody with more energy can finish that off and release their own version. This site and blog will remain available and I will provide updates on new projects. The SiEd for Palm project has been one of the best things I have ever worked on and I thank all those people who have helped me with it.

(full article here)

That doesn’t sound very good for SiEd fans, does it? But I have another reply of him:

Feel free to quote anything from my emails, blog or site. I’m not going to take the site down or anything, so SiEd will remain available. Who knows, maybe in 6-8 months when I get transferred to the Palm team here at Dataviz and they buy me a shiny new Tungsten, I’ll get the urge to carry on :-)

I think that sounds better. And I know people who changed from a Treo 600 to a Sony Ericsson P910i, and then to a Treo 650 again. PalmOS is the best ;)

Do you use SiEd? What do you think about this?

Google Video Store??

I recently installed a new thing from Google called the Google Pack. You can get it here. After installing, I clicked on a link in the program, and this is what I saw.
Google Video Store?

So, it appears the rumors are ALL TRUE, and Google is opening a video store some time in the near future. What do you think? Respond in the comments.
