What do you think? Will you run Linux on your Palm when it will work well?

  1. You’re missing Zire 71. I figured that since you listed the T and T2, and Zire 72 that you may be interested in adding Zire 71 to it.

Not to add more work for you though. ;)

  2. I don’t know a Linux port for the Zire 71. There is no one listed at handhelds.org and I can’t find one via Google. Do you know one?

  3. What will the advantages be if a user was to run Linux?

  4. Well, Linux is a multitasking O.S, and there is much software released under GPL. It just has to be compiled for ARM. Then you can run word processors, spread sheets, image editors (GIMP), MP3 blazers, browsers (good browsers, f. e. Minimo/Firefox), mail clients, IRC, GPS… and almost everything is free!

I will soon write an article about advantages and applications that could work.

  5. Trying to search for the TC port without luck….. wonder does anyone has an URL fot it?

  6. Where can we find a way to test this ?

There’s also a TC port. You can see all supported hardware here:

    Palm under ‘P’.

It seems as I forgot the Treo 650…

Testing: it’s not that easy. You have to install the bootloader (f.e. a TC bootloader from the Tungsten|C page). To load Opie or GPE, you need a NFS connection.

  8. If Linux would run on my LifeDrive and everything worked properly, I certainly would use it.

  9. I think there is someone in a German forum ‘Nexave’ who uses Linux on his LD. But at the moment I can’t recommend: you can’t use BT, WLAN, HDD, …

But I’m optimistically: the most of those ports are younger than 2 – 3 months and they already have good results today. And perhaps you can use Linux in a few months on your Palm, without problems. So let’s hope ;-)

  10. I don’t think you are too optimistically, Altho Linux project are very very young compare to other ports like the iPaq ones, but the progress like so promising….

I can’t wait when Linux is fully working under TC, GPE looks great with it!

  11. Perhaps I want to write some Linux reviews here. So I’m testing Knoppix now, and I have to say, there are so much apps, the most work stable, are fast,… better than Windows or PalmOS. And lets hope that many developers port their apps to Palm Linux.
