It's basiclly a glipepad that you would find on a laptop with pad pivoting on a rocker to give the switch action. SImply making the entire thing a touchpad would not be a big change in my opinion. Anyway, as You said, Apple has longtime experience with touchscreens and they´ve retained their rights over Newton technology...so maybe it´s time to use some.
