Ars technica has recently uncovered where the ads for SubWay sandwiches on a select few Counterstrike servers come from.

First of all, Valve has nothing to do whatsoever with these ads popping up.The code was created, but they didnt include it into the standard distribution. As far as Ars technica found out, the PR firm directly contacted mayor CS server admins and asked them to include the ads into their CounterStrike servers.

Secondary, this ad campaign has nothing to do whatsoever with Spyware beeing installed on your local box. It is said to be online-only!

This is an interesting development in game marketing if you ask me. Up to now, game server administrators had little or no means to finance themselves, With those ads, the server admins now have a way to monetize their server space. Don’t ask me why, but I feel that this will benefit CounterStrike players all over the world. from now on, good servers will generate good cash while slow, bad ones will not.
