Palm reently got a patent on a screen that goes monochrome when the power of the handheld containing it gets low:

While I don’t quite understand whats the great deal of innovation behing powering off the backlight and switching to 1bit color mode(a Tungsten T could do this with the neccecary addon software, as can my T3), there may actually be a prior art issue.

If you look at the page given above, you will see that the 100$ notebook that is buzzing around the media for a long time now(we almost got close to a prototype once btw, but our informant bailed in the last second) already seems to do that.

Also, I can recall that the good ole T68i did something similar when displaying the time…

Dont ask me, but I dont really get the idea behind this patent. Feel free to help us out!

One Response to “Palm’s new patent-isn’t it endangered?”

  1. Probably not a prior art issue, as I would guess Palm has had their application sitting in the patent office for a while…

What is strange is that this came out at or around April 1st, and it wasnt until today when I saw another site post it that I actually realized that this isnt a joke. Seriously, “technology to save battery by changing your screen to 1bit” real smart…thats only good for book reading, nothing else.
