Eric Sink wrote a good post about localizing apps.
His core point is that it is not enough to just change the language of the program, but that you also need to adjust the program so that it fits the “culture” of the target country.

Eric Sink’ assessments are spot on. Many a time I have come accross a “weird-sounding” UI translation for a specific app that made me scratch my head in wonder, trying to figure out what was meant by that. There are those developers/localizers who think that simply running the strings through Google Translate (or any other similar tool) would be enough, which is likely to result in a disaster, obviously…
