Our buddies from F-Secure have taken a stab at the future of phishing, and beleive that SMS will become a new “attack vector” soon:

I once was a victim of mobile phone spam myself(SMS spam), and thus can tell you that spammers are very very persistant nowadays. So, it is very possible that we will see a wave of SMS spam….

What do you think?

  1. I do agree on SMS spamming is the next possible wave of spmming…

I personally get about 5~10 SMS spams a day with Ads./WorldCup Gamble info from unknown Spammer and/or my mobile service provider…
(I am changing to another OP due to this problem.)

  2. Hi UTP,
    thank you for your comment!

IMHO, changing operator will not help; you need to change your phone number!

By the way, your site seems very slow today!

    Best regards

  3. Hi Tam,

    You are welcome!

Think it may help by changing my OP is because almost 50% ~70% of my SMS spam are from my service Provider, they even put their company name on the spam…

What also upsets me was they sent spam ad MMS to my number from time to time, remember the default setting of Treo 650 about MMS is auto get? In HK MMS are charged in both side, the sender and the receiver, I was charged about 4~5 US before I notice it…

About the speed of my site, Yeah, the hosting company I am using seems having a hard time this week….

    Best regards
    UTP

    :)

  4. Hi UTP,
it’s a damn provider making this!
Because of this circumstances changing is the best idea.
Personally i didn’t get even spam SMS.
I think the reason is nobody knows my number … and thats very good isn’t it? :-)

  5. Hi Lefus,

We get quite some spam SMS/Calls/Fax in HK, maybe due to a 125% of coverage in Mobile…..(so 1 person, 1.25 mobile number……)
I recon many of them are from the Mainland China, maybe cost of the spam are so low that they think it is worth to do so (Even Ads from a HK mobile service provider are from CN)….

I am also very caution about giving my number to unknown sources, but seems company here are “smarter”, within a lot of contract/forms to fill, the 7 pin fonts at the back of the form covers that company “so call” have the rights to use your number for other usage with their company and sub-company…..and of coz, there is no where you can disagree it, nor the saleman would even cover and explain that to you….

Random dialing Voice Recorded ads. are also another hated calls…..

Instead of plain spamming, I think the do spend sometime to “think” what user filter………
    Example:
    +86123456700000
    foo bar….blad blab blad….5784
    then
    +86123456700001
    fool bar….blad blab blad….2345
    or even
Unknown Caller……(which overseas calls have the same entry)

etc, so basic Call/SMS filter does not work.

Government of HK are setting up new Law against Spam Calls/Fax/Email now, but I think it only cover spams from local…

Which in the case, I don’t think it help much…

Back to the topic of SMS phishing, I have heard a few different cases of phishing around, wonder anyone interested?

  6. Hi UTP,
    thx for example.

OK … back to topic and step forward into other direction. :-)

I’ve seen and heared much more about BT-overtaken at Mobiles and smartphones than SMS phishing!

  7. Hi Lefus,
to be honest; my provider spams me very rarely(once a month or so).

However, I already saw quite a few virii in the wild in austria!

    Best regards
    Tam Hanna

  8. I wonder who’s going to be the first company to produce a spam filter for SMS messages? I think it’s a good idea – you heard it here first folks!
