APress recently published a few good books on running a software business – for example, the excellent Micro ISV from Bob Walsh(a MUST READ). Many of you probably know Eric Sink’s weblog (we linked to him a few times), and here is his book!

The business of software is divided into four parts which are each subdivided into chapters. Each of the chapters can stand alone and makes a very good read(probably even suited for classroom reading).
The first part of the book is called Entrepeneurship. It revolves about the challenges when managing a micro isv, about finding ideas and also a bit aboiut executing them.
Part two is called people. It covers loads of interesting things about staff, including what you whould hire and what you should avoid(people like great hackers, for example). If I had had this book a year ago, I would have saved myself one of the biggest staff mistakes ever made.
Part three is called marketing and covers all kinds of things related to product placement and communications. Part 4 covers sales, it contains one of the funniest texts about salesmen that I ever read.www
Paper quality is a real issue with this book. Making notes into it with a Parker 45 X-nib was next to impossible, the lines were like 2mm thick and blotted through to the back of the page!
Overall, this book makes a great companion for Bob Walsh’s micro isv. Bob Walsh handles the hints and prtactical tips, while Eric Sink focusses on the background action. If you buy Micro ISV(which you absolutely must), the 15 extra bucks at Amazon won’t hurt you – and the knowledge definitely is worth it! Buy the bundle today..it will pay out very soon!
