A few readers asked me for the successor of the old PalmAddicts Binary Clock ad. It curently sits in my T3′s outbox and should be online soon – nevertheless, TamsPalm readers get to see it first:
The new Binary Clock ad(woo hoo)

Here is a “brain dump” of the thoughts involved into the creation of the ad:
Make it animated
One of the biggest weaknesses of the ad was that it didnt stand out enough. Making an ad an image adds in a load of visual cues to make it more attractive – so hit it! Creating animated GIF’s is an easy process, and since our friends accept it, why not use it?

Give it some Tamoggemon identity
The font I chose as Tamoggemon font is now used in the banner, too. A person who already knows the font family, now has an easier way to identify the product.

Cut the text
The old banner was full of rather small text. Since users hate to read, the banner was ignored most of the time. The new banner contains less words than the entire old banner(!!) – so reading it is easier.

Give some images
The new banner has visuals – they look somewhat cool and cost very little. Visuals that show a handheld seem to “hit” better than comics – and they are very very easy to produce.

We can look a bit at the production too if you want to – for now, what do you think?

  1. I think the images flip by too fast. I suggest slowing the framerate by perhaps 50%

  2. The frame rate is too fast and the font is difficult to read. Like the program and your site but don’t like the advert sorry :(

  3. Have to agree, image flipping much too fast and font not easy to read. Especially when text is over an image (on top of treo keys for instance) or these funky colors are used (cyan on white- no contrast!!!) Furthermore, using this special font may appeal to old customers, but do they need the ad??? Don´t you want to attrackt NEW customers as well? Then you need to give them more time to read/understand:-)
Otherwise I think that the add improved definitely- it becomes a bit more obvious what the software can be used for etc.
