On Google Video, a very very boring and uninteresting video(here) made it to the top 100 and now sticks there. Jeff Atwoods writes a post about how Joel Spolsky is going insane(to be honest…he has a good reason for having this Wasabi thing IMHO). The list of examples is very long…people that make it to the top and then stop getting better.
The reason for this is simple – once you are at the top, you are in the spotlight. The media permanentely runs articles with or about you, all ESD’s list you in their top lists, and every blogger wants to review your product. You have loads and loads of cash and can afford to squash competitors with lawyers and ads…you are on the top. People are used to running your product and don’t want to switch around any more…
On the other hand, a small company needs to be vigilant all the time. They fight for publicity, permanentely add new features and listen to customers all the time. They cant afford arrogance – its the kind of company everyone loves!
So, should you ever get to the top, keep this in mind. Listen to your readers and look for oppinions. Obviously, not every reader will follow all of your switches(!!!YOU WILL EVENTUALLY LOOSE OLD CUSTOMERS!!!) – but if there’s a big scream, something could be wrong!
What do you think?
