I dislike RFID tags for a varienty of reasons. When RFID tags are used to protect Palm OS handhelds, I can understand this. However, I recently bought a 3$ tin of hair gel and saw this:

A RFID tag! As if this isn’t crazy… . Protecting a 3$ tin with a RFID tag that probably costs not much less…

  1. This isn’t RFID, this is dumb antitheft. They don’t transmit any data and don’t contain electronics. Very cheap stuff.

  2. In the US large retailers such as Wall-Mart have mandated that their suppliers tag with RFIDs. That’s driving down tag price. Anticipated pricing of 5ct per tag is an illusion for 2007.
    RFIDs will replace barcodes.

BTW, you’re the customer – by choosing this product you have cast your vote in favor of RFIDs. The marketing guy’s understand your buying decision like this: you’ve been willing to pay extra for something that you don’t value.

  3. Hi,
Tampax..ok, I have no idea here. Nevertheless – it is _NOT_ hair gel…and I wanted to buy that and no antitheft.

As for buying, I noted that when walking home. Should look out for another brand from now on..its too strong anyways =(.

    Best regards

  4. At the moment these RFID tags are found everywhere here in Portugal and the rest of Europe!

  5. For the love of god, these are not RFID tags, they are acousto-magnetic tags. They store no information, and are only an anti theft device. Even if they were RFID its still a mute point since there is no RFID standard. Without standards, their is a very little likely hood that the tags from one store will be read by the tags of another. With passive tags(which would probably be the tags used in retail)the read distances are less than 10 meters. So the only place where the tags will be read is within the store you are buying the associated products from. Which if you have yet to realize, stores already track what you buy through their tills.
