A friend of mine recently asked me about how he can keep a PC running without allowing others to use it. On Windows NT based machines, there is a simple trick:

Press the Windows key, and while holding it press L.

This will lock the machine. Your applications will continue zto run, however, all user input is disabled until an administrator or you log in to unlock it.
