Palm Os users usually see the Fossil WristPDA(review) as the first smart watch but this isnt true. A variety of manufacturers attempted to create and market all kinds of smart watches but Brandos is the first one to offer video playback and voice recording in addition to MP3 playback! Looks like an ambitious set of features how does the box fare in practice?
Package contents/shipping
Like all other Brando products, the MP4 watch ships in a large envelope via standard mail. The envelope contains a huge box that contains the watch, a US-Only charger, the USB cable, a set of headphones, the software CD and a miserable manual:
First impressions
Compared to the WristPDA, the Brando MP4 watch is quite a bit smaller, but also feels cheaper(especially the strap):

The watch has three buttons on each side; they are comfortable to press. The left side has the standard 25inch headset jack, the right side has the proprietary USB connector(this is NOT miniUSB!!!):
The screen
Brando claims that the MP4 watch has a 128×128 pixel OLED screen. While I cant confirm the OLEDness from the outside, the screen has exceptionally high contrast(next to Treo 600):

Black really is black here absolutely no residue light:

I tested the screen indoors and in mild sun, and had absolutely no problems. While the screen could maybe have been a tiny bit brighter, it does a very very good job overall!
Navigation
The watch has a highly hierarchical menu system that has a graphical top layer:

Navigating through the menus can be difficult at times as key layouts change dependant on the screen it took me about 20 minutes to figure it all out.
The menu system itself is very very fast absolutely no lag here. However, long song names scroll by slowly this could have been solved better maybe:
MP3 playback
The main feature of this watch IMHO is its ability to play back media. I installed a few MP3 files onto it and had no problems with the various standard bandwidths(128k, 192k, 260k). 320k files stutter every now and then a bit annoying, but the stuttering stops when the watch goes into sleep mode after a few seconds.
The player interface itself is simple you see the time remaining, the name of the song and how many songs are in the folder. When one folder is complete, the watch simply switches over to the next folder shuffle, custom playlists, etc are not available:

Forwarding and rewinding a song takes a very long time, as the watch keeps rewinding with an ever-constant rate of about 3 secs per real second. Also, finding tracks in folders is difficult because of the slow scroll speed of the file names:
Voice recording
The MPEG4 watch can record audio an impressive feature for such a small device. The quality of the recordings is very high, an hour takes about 60 megabytes of storage.
Here is a sample of a recording.
Photo viewing
Brando claims that the MP4 watch can act as a photo viewer. I installed a few small JPEGs onto it bummer, no go!
Images need to be converted to RAW format with a desktop software. They can then be displayed one by one on the watchs screen and thats it. No zooming, panning, etc is supported:
Video playback
Video playback works via a converter, too. A classic VGA review video from a digital camera grew by almost 50% when converted to the NXV format(128×128) the main problem is that the videos format was adjusted to be fullscreen compatible. So, a rectangular video gets square but it still looks pretty well.
Choosing a better-fitting aspect ratio in the converter works but you then have to put up with a white area at the bottom:

Conversion takes place in real-time converting a 50 second video takes 50 seconds..
Transferring data
Getting data onto the MP4 watch is simple if you have the connector cable handy connect the watch to the PC and it automatically starts charging:

When data is being transferred, the watch shows transfer on the status monitor data transfers work with about half a megabyte per second.
Headphones
The included headphones provide good audio quality. However, I prefer my Icemat headphones in combination with Brandos headphone adaptor. Audio is more than loud enough for most genres no problems in this department either!
Overall impression
Being the smart watch freak that I am, this watch is an immediate buy(1GB version costs 99$, 2GB cost 139$). The software could still use a bit of fine-tuning(occasional crashes, quirky handling, extra features) and the manual is a joke but other than that, I cannot complain about this watch.
Videos look good, audio is clear, the battery holds a decent charge(5h of MP3 playback are no problem) if you like the idea of a watch that plays movies, get this one by all means!

If I don’t listen to MP3, do you know how much are batteries going to last?
How do you manage to find those wonderful toys?
actually itwould be great to know the battery life. And, on unrelated topic, did the N70 arrive yet and when can we expect a review?
Hi,
the watch seems to turn off after a few minutes if no media is beeing played….
I ran for 5km a few days ago …and didnt note any battery degradation whatsoever. I would say that it is easy to get 5 h of lifetime from it!

Great watch, but does it tell time?
Nothing was written about it telling time or alarm feature…
nice review…I’ve been planning on getting one but wanted to know more about the NXV format. One thing for others wanting to buy it, I found out the orignal manufacturer is http://www.ChinaVasion.com and they sell at the wholesale price (approx 75USD, compared 100-130 from other websites).
Hi,
as for the watch features – I didnt get very far with them due to the bad manual. also, since I also have my good ole WristPDA, time telling already is handled elsewhere!
As for the wholeate site, looks like theres a bit of saving to incur there. Howevwer, I still reccommend people to purchase at brandos because they have excellent customer care(warranty, anyone?) and a long history of delivering goods reliably!

Hello, i’m Deepak Sharma .
i don’t know about mp4 , so please tall me leatest information about mp4.
Are you sure it has a proprietary USB jack, or is it the mini USB port used in digital cameras these days? My friend has a Pentax which uses a really small USB connector, which is annoying but at least not impossible to get extra cables. Let me know. Thanks!
Hi,
my WristPDA has the classic MiniUSB port. However, the Brando does not accept the cables that work with the WristPDA – so IMHO, this is proprietary…

Got the 1GB mp4 watch for x-mas. I loved it,but there are some really annoying snags:
-The headphone jack is 2,5mm so i have to get a converter for my favorite headphones.
-The video is in something called NXV format which makes the videos take up more space than the original ones from your computer, this really sucks.
-No time telling while playing music/vids. You have to exit playing mode to see what the time is. No resume.
-no alarm of any kind
-No continous clock display, turns itself off after 5 secs.
But still,i love it. Hopefully we will see some firmware upgrades or something. It plays music really loud & looks super. Makes me feel like i`m a timetraveller from year 2050!
Hi Andy,
the watch even offers an update menu in its Options – so we could have good luck.
Maybe I’ll take mine apart one day and see whats inside – some kind of open source firmware would be too cool!

Does it play VBR MP3?
Hi,
IMHO yes – I tested a lot of MP3s, and all worked well!

@Andy
-the watch does show a clock while playing music, you just have to wait a few seconds. The time you have wait is selectable in the display menu, under backlight time.
-you can leave the watch on constantly playing music or on a menu to show the clock forever. The watch comes preset with an auto off feature, which can be disabled or shortened in the time menu, under auto off.
-you can also see the time while the watch is off by holding the menu button for a few seconds. The clock then disappears after a few seconds, but you can hold the menu button to get it to stay on longer.
I got my watch off thinkgeek, but it appears to be the same watch.
Also, a more efficient NXV converter would be a great help for the watch.
-No time telling while playing music/vids. You have to exit playing mode to see what the time is. No resume.
I don’t think so. If you leave it alone (don’t touch any buttons!) for about a minute in either the menu or while playing music, it will default to showing the time, a screensaver of sorts. As many have said, the manual is laughable, in its barely intelligible Chinglish, but you can still get the gist of what they’re saying. I’ve figured out how most of it works, save for the playing modes (repeat, shuffle, etc.) One of the coolest features IMO is the ability to delete files on the watch. Just hold the menu button, and it should ask whether or not you want to delete the file. It’s a great watch. I got mine from thinkggeek.com for $130.
-the watch does show a clock while playing music, you just have to wait a few seconds. The time you have wait is selectable in the display menu, under backlight time.
Thank you! I didn’t know what “backlight time” was. And it’s http://www.thinkgeek.com , though I recommend Chinavision because it’s only $76.
Hi,
as said – I recommend Brando because of the excellent customer care. They also make a great job working around customs – a task at which ThinkGeek fails miserably!

Hey, ive just recently got this watch off ebay, its great, i love it. although, i was wondering if there is anyway to change it to 12hour time, not the default 24hour time? if anyone could help me id be very greatfull. thanks
Dylan
I’m afraid there is no way to change the time format on this watch, hopefully a firmware upgrade will address the bugs and basic watch functions once it becomes more popular. Great watch though, shame the nxv software is so temperamental.
Z
If/when firmware updates are made available, where would these be found?
Is there a manufacturer’s web site somewhere?
Hello!
I’v just got he mp4 watch, i bought it from the local store, about 130$ for 2GB but it was totally worth it BUT when i plugget in to the computer I FOUND A TROJAN HORSE!! I’v tested it with both AVG antivirus and Symantecs norton 2007!! It’s very strange do someone else have a common problem????
But what i have seen the screen is the best 1,5″ screen i’v seen, and I have seen meny…
Hey!
You can solve the virus problem by do a format on the watch, but when you format it, it will turn back to chinese, so you most know how you change back to english, also try “reseting” it, that is a good option.
Greetings!
John Silver.
its nicen loud for sure. Better than my Sony Ericson 850!. I had problems with the fast-forward and emailed brando and like days later I had an entirely new watch! I have fixed the other one myself but am cautious about selling on ebay and will probably do a buyer beware type sale since the contrl buttons feel like they could go at any second. Its a snazzy geekwatch and a precursor of what’ll be everyday or even old-school in the next 3 or 5 years.

Please help…I’m unable to figure out how to get photos onto the watch…I can get them onto the software…but then what???..How do I save them so they’ll transfer???..Does the watch need to be at a certain function to transfer???..Please provide very simple….step by step… explicit instructions… You can’t insult me by over explaining…I’m really awful with these things….Thanks You!!!
Help!! The watch keeps crushing on me. Now when I turn it on it says wellcome and then shuts right down. I know they say that may be a problem of not enough charge but I charged it all night. I have had it two days but it has been quite a headache.
Hi,
try formatting the thingy…maybe you installed some kind of data onto it that it didn’t exactly like…
Best regards
Tam Hanna
Thanks I connected the watch to the computer opened explorer and found a Setings.dat file after deleting this file the watch got on but in Chinese after a bit of guessing around I managed to change it back to English. Thanks again
My watch while connected to USB connects then disconnects over and over again. Have you seen this problem. May it be simply a loose connection between the watch and the cord?
Hi Tom
This will happen when the battery reaches full capacity. As long as the functionality of the watch is still ok, then don’t worry too much. If there are further probs please specifiy and I will try and help.
Z
FYI if you are thinking about getting this but want a correct 4:3 aspect ratio… there’s a widescreen version of this with 4 gigs and a built in speaker and 3.5 mm jack for like $77 on http://www.chinavasion.com
The Swede is right… there are a number of these that were shipped with a Trojan Horse. The one I got had had RavMon (and a rather nasty affair for an unprotected computer). I suggeset Anybody that gets one of these charge it (externally) and then format it ! DO NOT HOOK IT TO YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL AFTER THE FORMAT. (Don’t forget you have to reslect the English, second from bottom of the display menu choice, top sub menu item) The demo stuff is Hardly worth the infection ! Otherwise This watch is utterly fantastic. I highly recommend it to any aspiring technocrat. I hate when hackers/Virus writers mess with my tech, it pisses me right off. Why don’t these idiots use their talents for constructive purposes ?
Sorry about the poor spelling and grammar above, a sleepless night over an infected computer will do that.
I forgot, mine came from gadgetuniverse so be very careful and format any you by from them.
My watch says “NO FORMAT”, does anyone know how i can fix this problem? Do i have to reset it somehow? If so, how?
Hi my watch is also showing welcome screen and then blank. I suspect it is the backlight which I last put in the off position. Anyway when I connect to the computer and use explorer there are no files not even seting.dat only the 3 dir. Anyone can help.
thanks
when i plug my mp4 watch onto the computer, that ready symbol and stuff should come on, but it doesn’t. When i plug it into the wall, nothing happens, she doesn’t even turn on. When i try to turn her on using the battery it won’t work. My computer recognizes that it is there, but it will not let me access it. Please e-mail me with a answer a.s.a.p at t-man186@hotmail.com.
Thanks
That sounds good, and i find some other style of mp4 watches in a new website which called http://www.rihey.cc , so you can try to get a much cooling mp4 watch there. have fun.
does anyone know to change the clock appearance? mine looks like a analog display.
well i dont know how to set up the libraries for my music and movies etc. and i need help.
The watch keeps crushing on me. Now when I turn it on it says wellcome and then shuts right down
Hi Folks,
I got my 2 Gig Mirror-Faced watch with all the same features, but with twice the MEMORY from DNYSTORE..com in FARMINGTON HILLS, MI. for $79.95! Same everything, but WAY less than you paid for. GRANTED their manual STINKS, it is written in broken CHINENGLISH at best, but you get it all for $79.95 + SHIPPING. GJA
Hi Greg,
.
in fact – there already is a 16:9 version of the watch available, and …
This review is approx 2yr old now
.
Best regards and thanks for talking back
Tam Hanna
Thanks Tam….
Guess I should have read the Dates, huh? LOL I am having H-E- double hockey sticks with my 2 Gig trying to get it to let me load ANYTHING ON it! (I am really interested in photos of my wife and kids and my Dad – who will be 77 in a couple days!) And yes, the manual STINKS! DNY PROMISES that they are working on a new and improved manual, but a lot of good it does me now! Huh? Mine will dump the battery if I connect it to the USB and I did REFORMAT it BEFORE hooking it up to my computer. Strange. Plus, the watch was shipped with the little chain to the input port already BROKEN! I let them have it over that deal. Took me two weeks to get a reply – they said they were “ALL” in CHINA working with their suppliers! sounds like a lot of BS to me. What do you think? So, I have a 2 gig really cool watch that tells time – that’s it! I want to load my kids pic so bad, but it won’t let me, and what the heck is the number BEFORE the date? Usually 0-5?? Your input is really appreciated! Great to hear from you, Tam!
Best wishes
Greg from Bethany, Oklahoma
Hi,
IMHO, all you need to do is connect it to the PC – at least that is what I did for mine…
What type of computer are you using?

Hi!
I was wondering, I seem to have an older version of this same watch, would there be any way to update the firmware that you know of? It says firmware version 2.106, and apparently this firmware is defferent than the one on your watch.
Thanks,
anonymous
Hi,

Btw,if the watch doesn’t react on aything e.g resetting, just leave it for the battery to run low.
After is falls out you can turn it on normally again.

Hi Folks,
once again: I don’t use this watch anymore and thus can’t answer any questions. Please contact your seller!
Sorry!
Tam
Were can you get free online videos and movies to download to the watch?
Hi,
no idea – and we generally don’t condone illegal downloads here.
All the best
