This ad has recently begun to pop up all over Vienna(click for bigger version):
badadt On overloaded ads

The reason I post this is that it is one of the worst ads I ever saw. It lacks a catchy graphic, one doesn’t immediately understand what its for, it has no visual hierarchy,…

Whatever you do – don’t copy that ad’s style…

  1. But…… It’s such a bad cluttered advertisement that it made you stop and have a look at it.

Furthermore, you took a picture of it to show us!

I think the ad. got quite a bit of coverage.

Still don’t know what it’s advertising though!

  2. It’s asking for money for handicapped kids in developing countries …
My analysis (since I’m in marketing) goes like this:
If the ad is placed in one of the chic or tidy areas of the city, then people will be drawn to it because it looks messy, like it’s graffiti or something. Also, since it’s for handicapped kids, it’s probably actually created by these kids, so shame on you for delegitimising its value. On the other hand, you can’t read German, so it’s not your fault ;)
I think it actually was very effective, given the design of the ad, its target group (people in Wienna are rich- trust me) and the point of the ad. For an example of something that’s REALLY ugly in Vienna, look up “Hundertwasser”…
    Cheers

  3. Hi Mattitude, Allen;
this may now sound cheesy, but as I am looking at this post again a few days after writing it, I start to very much agree to you two…the ad was soo “bad” that it made me look…although figuring what it was for took me quite some time…time I wouldn’t have when racing past in a car…

Best regards and thanks for the insightful comments

    P.s. As for Hundertwasser…hmm, no comment *ashamed_is*

  4. It’s a punk poster ad and punk will always attract your attention for being ugly and nasty looking, well punk looking! So obviously this angle worked for some people. The fact the ad is raising money for kids is bizarre because alot of older people who would normally donate to these causes, or who have a middle class attitude will be put off by such a punky advert, thinking it is in bad taste. My personal view is that it looks like trash and therefore makes you think of trash.

  5. Hi,
same feelings here…Deekstar Discounts Guy – fully agree here. BTW, they already stropped running it…

    Best regards
