Yours truly doesn’t usually eat ice cream – my lung suffers enough from cold drinks… . Nevertheless, today, venturing out to a popular italian ice cream shop felt like a good idea.

Felt, because the shop has one huge flaw: it doesn’t offer the classic ice cream compositions. Someone in the management of the store decided to ditch all classic compositions that the average Austrian eats – and replace them with italian ones never seen before.

The rationale behind this was a repositioning of the store – it wants itself to be considered the cutting edge italian ice cream dispenser…and it seems to have achieved its goals(aka store was full).

However, let’s now assume that the store would have continued to offer classic ice cream along with its new offerings – the amount of customers would have probably increased even more. And heaven forbid if the repositioning would have failed…

Overall, ditching a classic and old solution sometimes becomes necessary. However, it is a move that should not be done in haste or without good reflection – as it can cost you many customers. Old doesn’t mean unpopular or useless…40year old Parker Pens still write beautifully and old apps can still sell…
