Just in case someone looks for a lawsuit: I am NOT a tax lawyer! The hints below describe what I did…there’s no warranty that this is the best, correct or whatever way. Follow the instructions below AT YOUR OWN risk!

As you probably already noticed, I am a big friend of MobiHand, the only Tam-Hanna-jerk-free certified ESD. MobiHand is indeed a great ESD with affordable rates, cool account reps and good commissions – but, as all other ESD’s they are bound to withhold 30% of the income of a foreign developer for the IRS.

However, getting rid of (some of the) withholding is easy – just follow the steps below.

Get the tax forms
Log into MobiReach. Click Profile, then Tax Information. Scroll down to find the form W8-BEN. Print the form out after opening it with a PDF reader of your choice!

Fill out the tax form
Get yourself a black or blue pen(no other colors because of the faxing process in step 3). Then, fill the form out. Most areas are straightforward, except for:

6) Leave this blank
8) Leave this blank
9a) Check the checkbox, fill in the country where you live

Once again, you don’t need an ITIN. Or – at least, I didn’t…

Fax the tax form to MobiHand
Once you have the form filled out, write a little cover letter saying sth like the text below:

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
please find attached the tax form W8-BEN for MobiHand partner YOURCOMPANY.

Please contact me at YOUREMAIL should you have any enquiries.

Best regards
YOU

Then fax the letter and the form to 001-650-587-0005. Additionally, send an email to your account rep telling him that the tax information was just faxed out!

For me, following the steps above led to the complete elimination of the withholding fee – I now get my full income paid out to Austria via Paypal. What about letting us know how low your withholding rate gets?
