Palm has silently posted an update to its Java VM about three weeks ago(July 13th).

BrightHand lists the following improvements:

  • Added NetLibSocketConnect time out.
  • Now handles overriding Displayable.getTitle.
  • Fixed alt key producing ‘?’ on Treo 680 and 700.
  • Fixed virtual keys, home, etc., now quit Java app.
  • Fixed CustomItem.keyReleased and keyRepeated.
  • While Palm dropped support for Tungsten T2, Tungsten W and Zire 71 handhelds, most other OS5 machines including the Treo 600 and the Palm Tungsten E(E1) are still supported. Palm states the following devices to be supported:

    Treo 600, Treo 650, Treo 680 and Treo 700 P smartphones, T|X, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E, Tungsten E2, Tungsten T5 and Zire 72 handhelds, LifeDrive mobile manager.

The VM can be downloaded for free here – you apparently no longer need to enter a valid serial number.

P.s. Palm folks…a press release about this would have been TOO nice…

    1. Note that this update also includes the files/dlls needed for the PalmOS simulators. With the previous version they were not included and you had to get them separately from the Access website.

    2. I just upgraded and noticed that Opera Mini 4 beta is *much* more stable now. I’m actually able to use it for light browsing now. Thanks for the information!

    3. I think you still need to enter data about your device, purchase date etc.:

    4. Not if you use this link (from the PalmAddict RSS feed).

    5. I must be doing something wrong, but when I download the file, I get a message saying an external application must be launched. When I hit “ok,” nothing happens.
      Any suggestions? Thanks.

    6. After re-reading that, what I guess I mean to say is that the last time I downloaded this app., I didn’t need any external application. I just installed the .prc files.

    7. Of course, the direct download link worked also with the old version. But it’s not Palm’s “official” link :)

    8. Where can someone download this now?
      IBM direct?
      I have a Cingular/ATT 650
      Anybody help?
      Thanks,

    9. would like a direct download link for ibm java vm for my treo 650
