So, anything nick-able for a T|X?
I would think so… perhaps they need some patching by Dmitry. We will see when there is the first ROM dump. But I’d guess:
Files
IM (it needs the phone as long it’s unpatched imho)
Bluetooth perhaps
PIM apps (have some minor differences)
Messages perhaps
Media
Blazer (needs to be patched) & VersaMail
some of the new Prefs panels
Any idea what the updates to Messaging (SMS) were? My 755p says version 2.62 and the Centro apparently is 2.7?
No, sorry, but I don’t know the 755p version … And Palm never publishes a “changelog”. But we will probably know the difference soon.
Hello Swamp Thing, when I get my TX back, I’m going to try to port over everything, and see what causes reset loops and what doesn’t (I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot of reset loops). As a preliminary guess, I’m going to say that the PIM apps will probable work, as long as Palm keeps 320×480 compatibility (the Contacts app from the 755p v1.33 was starting to cause glitches). Files v2.1 should work, but after that all bets off. Blazer 4.5+ hasn’t worked on the TX, and Dmitry said the porting process was going slow because of all the Treo specific function calls. VersaMail is also up in the air, as the version from the 755p caused me many problems, so we’ll just going to have to see with v4. Media broke along time ago, and I highly doubt it’ll work. Everything else we’ll just have to see.
The PIM apps should work. That the ones from 755p have HiRes+ problems is new to me. Normally Palm tries to keep compatibility for devices in the future (but who knows if there will be another HiRes+ Palm?!). But even if they don’t work probably, you don’t miss many features. I haven’t seen anything new.
The Files application will probably work, too, on your TX. The one from LifeDrive (2.0 I guess) was VERY unstable on Palm OS 5.2 machines, and this one even refuses to start on everything < 5.4.
Blazer - not without patching. But also here: I didn’t see any new features. It has its old problems, f. e. many pages aren’t displayed correctly as they are too big.
VersaMail - imho yes. I can try it, if you want. It could even work on older 5.2 devices, but when viewing mails you will see all HTML tags. On TX, as I said, it *could* run - more or less - properly.
I think Media would work if we knew all which files to copy. On my Tungsten C, I could get Media 1.0 (from Zire 72) running, even Media 2.0 (Tungsten E2) did it one time - but never again. The newer the apps, the more files they need.
I don’t think the pics and videos app will work because it interacts with Blazer, streaming Video, and the Camera, all things the TX doesn’t have.
VersaMail from the 755p caused me reset loops. I believe the MMSDCard and MMSDCard_enUS files was what caused the problems because when I removed them everything worked OK (maybe it was because the 755p had a Mini SD slot?)
I’ve been using Files 2.0 from the LD, and it has worked great, I expect 2.1 to do the same.
The new “Map” button in the Contacts app on the 755p, did not go down to the bottom of the screen when the DIA was lowered like the rest of the buttons. There were a couple other glitches too, it seems Palm is starting to break 320×480 compatibility.
I had to do a hardreset because I installed the MMSDCard (of the TX or LD or something) last year… IMHO not because of the MiniSD slot.
I have no idea why then, it seems that those two files aren’t compatible with other devices. I really have no idea what they do, but I know that they interact with Palm Files, and the SD Card (duh
) See here: http://tamspalm.tamoggemon.com/2007/08/01/saving-versamail-attachments-to-an-expansion-card-on-a-palm-tx-with-palmone-files/
“I’ve been using Files 2.0 from the LD, and it has worked great, I expect 2.1 to do the same.”
I just realized that I had tested Files 1.0 (from a T3?) on my T{X, but not Files 2.0.
I have now installed Files 2.0 from the LifeDrive SDK simulator, and it works fine on my T|X. Note that I installed FOUR files named “FileBrowser(…)” to accomplish this.
What are the functional differences between 1.0 and 2.0?
Files 1.0 is from the T5, the only difference I see between the two is 1)2.0 has multi-selection, and 2) you can browse in full 320×480 in other applications, as v1.0 you could only browse in 320×320. There might be other slight improvements, but I can’t think of them off-the-top-of-my-head. yes the LD version needs four files:
FileBrowser -PFil
FileBrowserCacheLib -PFil
FileBrowser -PFil_enUS (or your language of choice).
FileBrowserLib -PFiA
Thanks, Brent!
Files 1.0 came with the Tungsten T5… Are you sure that it only supports 320×320?
EDIT: OK, in other applications …
@Swamp Thing
No problem!
@Anybody who knows
Does anybody know how to use large Icon View in Files? If you use Files, you probable know that different file types are represented by icons e.g. an HTML Doc will have an icon that looks like a world with a little paper, the strange thing about these icons is that unlike apps like Resco Explorer that also has icons represent file types, Files does not use “Application Icons” (tAIB 1000 and 1001), it uses a special icon that is present in the Application that handles that file type. So Blazer (the app that handles HTML), has in its resources that little World & Paper icon, and Pocket Tunes has the little MP3 icon, ect. ect. Now the strange thing is that not only do these apps have a small icon, they also have a larger one. But I see absolutely no way to use this large icon in Files, it would make sense that in files there should be some alternate view, but there isn’t (not that I’ve found anyway). Anybody know the reason behind this?
IMHO there is no second viewing mode.
Then why the larger icon? Look in the Blazer resource, and you’ll see it (if you use a device with Blazer 4+ that is). Anybody else know?
Brent,
I’m not sure if this is what you are asking, but each app should have in its resource two different sized icons: the large one that shows in Favorites, in Applications “icon view” etc., and the small one that shows in Applications “list view”, in “Files” etc.
The small app icon shows in Files when the filetype is recognized, otherwise a generic icon is shown.
I guess Files doesn’t have an “icon view” because it would crowd the screen to much, especially smaller Treo and Centro screens.
Hello,
I don’t believe “Files” uses the tAIB resources (the “List” and “Icon” views you alluded to), I think it uses its own “special” icons that can be found in the application that handles that file type. The Blazer application icon just looks like a world, while a HTML Doc viewed in “Files” looks like a World with a little sheet of paper. If you look at the resources with a tool like Tmpedit on your Palm, or PCFD on the desktop, you can see this.
Ah, my mistake. Still, I imagine a large Icon View in Files would be cramped and difficult to navigate.
Are the larger Files icons for use in Favorites? Favorites uses Files to link to documents and web links, (instead of just apps), and displays large icons for these.
For examples, an HTML doc link in Favorites displays the “world with a little sheet of paper” icon (in its large size) while the link to Blazer displays the world icon.
That is correct, I just checked it in the Simulator. I had totally forgotten about Favorites (I never use it
), thanks for clearing that up!
FWIW, I have loaded Files 2.1 on a T|X, and it works perfectly (as did Files 2.0 from the LD).
I really can’t see any difference between 2.0 and 2.1, however. Perhaps it was just a bugfix?
Oh, and for 2.1 only 3 files seem to be involved:
FileBrowser -PFil
FileBrowserCacheLib -PFil
FileBrowser -PFil_enUS (or whatever language)
Anybody care to try something else? The latest Bluetooth, perhaps?
I also see no difference between 2.0 and 2.1…. I tried VersaMail 4 from the Centro, and it errored and blerted some nonsense about invalid database (I’m not done trying though
), I also tried IM, and it complained the TX didn’t have the Phone Library. I’d try Bluetooth, but I don’t have anything else to use it with!
I finally found out the difference between Files 2.0 and 2.1, 2.1 REMOVES THE BLAZER OPEN FILE OPTION!!! Isn’t it usually the higher version number the more features? Why would Palm get rid of that? Strange…..
This is crazy, i know, but I’m not sure I remember Blazer on the T|X having an “Open File” option.
Is it that Files 2.0 enabled an “Open File” option in Blazer but Files 2.1 doesn’t?
…There’s “Go to Web Page” option, where you can also enter an address in the form of “file:///whatever” to open a saved HTML file.
…You can also have Blazer Bookmark a saved HTML file and reopen it later.
…And of course if you have Files installed (2.1 anyway), you can use it to open HTML files in Blazer, and you can have an HTML file as an entry in Favorites too.
Files 1.0 and 2.0 enables the Open File option on the TX, but mysteriously 2.1 does not. Well I’m going back to 2.0 from the LD.
There must be *some* reason for this. Maybe 2.1 was a bugfix?
When you go back to Files 2.0, could you please confirm that the Blazer “Open Files” option works okay?
Yes, it works great - as always
Okay, back to 2.0 it is!
I would like to copy the Messages 2.7 app to my Treo 755p. Does anybody know what files that app consists of?
