Our comrades over at the PalmInfoCenter have just reported about a leaked AT&T presentation containing – among other things – news on the next Treo 680 update.
PTT stands for Push To Talk and is a data service that allows users to use their devices in a walkie-talkie fashion. Carriers usually charge per day of usage; the messages usually get played back as soon as they arrive. The IM client will probably be similar to the Centro’s. As for TeleNav and MobileTV – sorry, no idea on what that is.
The update will be deployed via a desktop PC(no OTA due to huge data amounts) – it is said to become available at the following URL at an undefined point in the future(probably also for unlocked GSM – the 750v update has att in the URL):

TeleNav? Does the 680 have some kind of embeded GPS that has not been mentioned before (at least to me) which is now being enabled by this update?
Or is it somehow going to use the phone company’s direction-finding E911 type stuff to figure out where it is?
No, I don’t think so
Could be someting like “Proximity Sensing”. Since AT&T uses GSM, they most likely use Wireless Enhanced 911 (Time difference of arrival (TDOA) works like GPS using multilateration, except that it is the networks that determine the time difference and therefore distance from each tower (as with seismometers).)
Haha … We have IM for Treo 680 right now. And soon we will (probably) have it for any device!
If you want to use IM on your device for anything more than very occasional use, I’d suggest getting a dedicated IM client. The 3rd party ones are pretty good.
I’ve been using Causerie for some time and like it a lot, but I’ve heard that IM+ is pretty rocking. Mundu is liked by many as well and it’s the cheapest at only 11 bucks.
If you want to do IM and don’t want to pay anything for it, you can use chatopus or gizmo. They’re jabber clients so they won’t do AIM/Yahoo/MSN or anything natively. However you can easily setup a jabber account on a server which allows for “bridging” between services.
Don’t rely on the build in. It’s stupid.
Hello DrBuzz0,
I have tried IM+ on a few occasions and, imo, it suffers from the NVFS locking snafu (application is either 1) too old to know about NFS locking, or 2) the developers were too lazy to lock the code in the dbcache)
Anyways, thanks for commenting!
