Just a quick newsflash from the Palm blog.

As of January 12th, Palm will no longer be offering the Java Virtual Machine for download on their website.

“As of Jan. 12, 2008, we will no longer be providing this as a downloadable application from our website”

This is a free download for all Treo 600, Treo 650, Treo 680 and Treo 700 P smartphones, T|X, Tungsten T5, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E2, Tungsten E, LifeDrive, and Zire 72 handheld users so, if you don’t have the JVM, make sure you download it as soon as possible!

TamsPalm is not sure why the JVM will no longer be available for download, but we will forward any information as it becomes availabel!

My guess is that their license ran out and they’ve not thought it worth renewing, I can’t see any other realistic reason for them to remove it

Could very well be! Palm probably didn’t make much money on the app, given that 90% of the supported devices had it available for free

Meh. Much as I would like to run java midlets on my palm, the JVM they have is so crappy, inefficient, slow and lacks support for newer extensions it’s hardly a loss.

What I really wish is that they’d offer a decent JVM and preferably integrated into the OS in an effecient way that allowed you to run the java stuff like other devices do.

Well I can always dream…

Hi,

IMO, the superwaba apps are java based, but not exactly java. the midlets would have to be compiled specially for superwaba and use their special IO stuff for it to work. I looked at superwaba programming myself back in the day, but the fact that it isn’t binary compatible with Java turned me off.

I’m afraid we cannot share the files once they’ve been pulled from the website (or at all for that matter)

Argh! I downloaded Operamini today and found out that I can no longer download a JVM to run it with.

Is this available for sale from somewhere, or are we now totally out of luck?
