Palm’s recently-released VersaMail 4 for Centro can be installed onto a Treo 680 with ease - I tried it, and must urge you not to do so!
At the first glance, VersaMail 4 is a smooth upgrade. All data is retained, the program runs smoothly and the new background send/receive facility really works a-ok.
In case you never sync your emails with your desktop, update to version 4 - you have little to loose and gain the aforementioned new feature. If you use the hotsync conduit though; DON’T DO IT. Once VersaMail 4 is on the Treo, you can kiss synchronization goodbye.
Centro owners - can you hotsync VersaMail email accounts with the PC using the software shipping on your Centro’s CD? Please let us know!
So If i download the update for the treo 680 the only thing i can’t do is the mail sync? ’cause i don’t do it anymore it setup bluettoth internet access (and gmail do not sync)

Yes, with VersaMail 4, Palm has dropped HotSync support. I already read this somewhere.
But as Tam writes, all other features seem to work correctly. Does anyone know the differences between VersaMail 3.5 and 4.0?
I think, he didn’t choose a good title for this article. Many people, like me, don’t use HotSync for VersaMail, but use it as a regular POP3 / IMAP client on their smartphone. And this WILL work. But this title sounds as if it could be “dangerous” to install this update.
BTW, if anyone tries to get this running on a T|X or other non-Treo PDA, we would like him to write here! In my opinion, it could work if the PDA is not too old (it should have Palm OS 5.4.)

I’m one of those who gave up on VersaMail upon upgrading to the TX; it crashed repeatedly during setup, losing messages and all of the setup info.
Still, others have reported success; I’m about to upgrade from TX to Verizon 755p, so I suppose I’ll give the brandy-new VersaMail another chance. Does this version come with the 755p? I haven’t used a desktop email conduit for years already…
Done I downloaded and it is running on my treo 680 so far so good, the background downloading works great no problems at all. I’m gonna test IMAP for gmail and let you know
do you all know if this install is possible on a TX. The current version does not work with gmail IMAP and I would like it to do so?
I Have tested IMAP on my Treo 680 for gmail account and the wizard setup up my account without intervention it is great!! and the IMAP sync efforthless, you gain IMAP access and loose emial sync (but if you are on gmail it doesn’t work either)
The install on a TX i think it is possible ’cause the palm website does not make a device check however I don’t if you could have troubles so is kind of risky

First of all, the installer just won’t run on the TX. To attempt to install it, I had to run the installer in the Palm SIM (Centro), then install the files manually. This also won’t work, because upon launch it immediately errors with something about “Invalid Database”. It will not work, and I don’t think there is any way to get it work on non-Treo devices. BTW, I’ve heard multiple reports from Brighthand members that this VersaMail 4 update also works well on the 755p.
If it says “Invalid Database”, you could try to delete all files of older VersaMail versions. It could be incompatible with them (please make a backup before doing so!)

I tried that already, and it didn’t work. I also tried installing the temp files from the sim that are associated with VM (Mutimail Messages, ect), and it still didn’t work. If there is a way to get something working on my TX, I usually can, but I just don’t think this will work without patching - which is to much work for something that doesn’t look that much different than v3.5.1.

you can run the installer if you use MakeTungsten to simulate a Treo…
If a Treo 650 isnt enough, I can always make ya a new version with Treo 680 support!

The answer is ‘no’ - at least it is in the UK. Here is the message from Palm tech support when I contacted them about it:
“The functionality of being able to Sycronize your Centro, with the Palm Desktop 6.2 and HotSync Manager 7 with VersaMail, is not supported.”
They refer to KB ID 11149 which spells it all out in gory detail. It’s rather disappointing and curious since this facility was available in earlier versions of HotSync Manager.

I installed the Centro update on my Treo 755P and my Fiance’s Treo 700P. She uses Yagoo, and I use GMail, and I love the IMAP capabilities, although I do not always turn on the push IMAP. I use SMS to alert me to important e-mails. I think it’s faster than push IMAP. Since I do not sync to outlook, I really do not need this functionality. I am required to use outlook at work, so I do, but nowhere else. I use Google for everywhere else, including my personal stuff I access at work. Now I can Sync my outlook calendar with Google calendar!!!
