Australian Carrier Telstra has added Palm’s Centro smartphone to its line-up of phones sold to pre-paid customers(aka folks who don’t want/need a contract with monthly fees).

The device will cost 299$(IMHO, approx as much as it costs unlocked) and will initially ship SIM-locked to Telstra’s SIM cards according to the PalmInfoCenter.

For me, this really shows that demographics the Treo is targetted at. Yes, I used an old Treo on prepaid long times ago – but I was the exception rather than the norm back then(not wanting to subsidy T-Mobile Austria).

People on prepaid generally are very light users – developers IMHO should not expect much revenue from these folks…

  1. oh so they have appreciated retail marketing already. i like pre-paid. no monthly dues to think about. good day!

Generally speaking, yes. And with prepaid-package phones even more so. But as one can see from the forums on http://www.nexave.de prepaid is often an option even for power-users.

    Keep on the good work!

  3. Hi Folks,
thank you so much for the praise!

The issue I have with Austrian Pre-Paid is that data costs are insane…along the lines of 5€ for just 10MB.

Other than that, it definitely is a possibility for voice only. I once had my Treo 600 on prepaid…

    Best regards

  4. A, well … that price-rate explains it indeed. Currently one can go prepaid on 2,40 EUR for 10 MB over here which makes it acceptable even for people like skybert and others.

  5. Hi,
hmm…2.4€ for 10MB…at my usage of 100MB/Month and more I’d pay more than 20€ for the data alone…

IMHO, it all depends on usage…

    Best regards
    Tam Hanna

  6. I guess prepaid option is best .. no need to worry about monthly dues , taxes etc
