Donald Kirker of OpenMobl systems made a presentation at Monday’s Stanford Palm User Group displaying the new UI behind Universe, code named Graphite.

The preview is “mostly showing what I hope to have implemented in the future” and does not have much besides the new UI system.

Graphite is a completely new UI system which does not use the standard PalmOS UI, giving Universe a more modern feel, somewhat similar to the (now defunct) LineUp and Saguaro vapourwares. However, Universe is not vapourware. :)

Feel free to download the UI preview (local copy for posterity: universe.prc)

  1. The UI looks great. He should put heptic response, just vibrate on press. The blue blur when pressing on the bottom could be bigger so pressing with a finger you will see better the effect. Maybe the bottom bar could be transperant or just transperant when scrolling through page.

I tried to put theses suggestions on his page but no luck. Maybe Donald will see theses suggestions and think about them, some could be good. Thx Donald for your support.

  2. Is this the one with the Webkit engine?

  3. @j: No WebKit. I’m still playing with WebKit, but not making any guarantees.

@Rui: Press the menu button. All of the controls disappear. Press to restore them.

  4. Thx Donald for the response. Cool that idea is even better pressing the menu key.

  5. looks sweet, good work bro! palm OS really needs a modern browser and now we are closer :D .

  6. Hi,
to be honest: I do NOT think that this product will ever drop.

Donald works at Palm’s – completing Universe is NOT something that Palm wants to have happen…

    All the best

  7. Why wouldn’t they? It’s not like they plan on ever giving blazer a facelift. IMO they’d be happy to finally see a secent (nonjava) browser.

  8. Hi,
they DONT WANT people owning Palm OS devices to surf the web properly!!!

    All the best
    Tam Hanna

  9. That sounds like a reasonable answer, tam… :)

Does Tamhan have some press contacts I don’t know of? Leaked internal memoes? Something like the Halloween Documents?

  10. Hi Ryan,
nop – but a close friend of mine is a VC and…well…the facts are on the table.

Just look at the Palm SDHC story…

    All the best

  11. Hi,

PalmSDHC was an entirely different issue. Protecting your tradename and taking out a completely unrelated product to detriment the usability of their own devices are two completely different issues. (That’s IMO of course, feel free to talk back.)

  12. Hi,
but, on the other hand, why didn’t they care about PalmPowerups before?

    All the best
    Tam Hanna

  13. Tam,

The issue was not only with PalmPowerUps, but ZZTechs and 3Gx were dragged into it too… Honestly I don’t know why everyone thinks Dima was ‘singled out’ because of the hackish nature of his apps, but IMO that is an incorrect and flawed logic. ZZTechs and 3gx aren’t the hackiest people on the planet, after all.

I have been in good contact with Donald lately (via AIM) and I have heard no mention of Palm telling him to lay off Universe, only many many complaints about bugs and PalmOS limitations and being horridly busy with the RealWorld..

    Best,
    Ryan

  14. Hi Ryan,
lets be honest: do you think that Donald would tell anyone about this?

    All the best
    Tam Hanna

  15. Hi,

Don’t you think he’d post to his blag that he’d discontinued development? IMO Donald would.

    ~Ryan

  16. Hi,
    no!

If he did that, Palm users would give up hope and buy sth else. This is a game of expectations and patience…

    All the best
    Tam Hanna
