The following small camera shoot-out originally popped up at TamsS60’s…
I originally expected a lot from the N96’s camera, as the N95 8GB performed extremely well. Unfortunately, I now know that it is nothing short of spectacularly crappy – look at the images below:
| Nokia N96 | ![]() |
| Palm Centro (1.3MP) | ![]() |
| Palm Treo 680 (VGA) | ![]() |
Even though the two Palm handsets have a significantly lower resolution, they manage to deliver significantly more accurate colors (the blur in the Centro’s image is due to a breeze).
How does your N96 perform?
P.S. I am on the latest firmware….

The Centro has 1.3 megapixel resolution and also video capability. I suppose when you enlarge a photo you can tell if the resolution is good. Color can be fixed but a fuzzy picture can’t be fixed.
Maybe you can see more differences in a movie shootout?
Hi philpalm,
yes – but isn’t the idea behind a cameraphone the ability to make shots anywhere and use them without editing?
All the best

True, in the final analysis. But when you enlarge a photo you can quantify that megapixel resolution really is worth comparing.
A lot of camera color can be adjusted by brightness and color adjustment. I suppose both these cameras have default settings and maybe some leeway on night time/ lighting conditions. Other color settings can be compared by taking pictures of neon signs. Neon red, green and blue are relatively able for anyone to standardize.
Nonetheless you are applauded for attempting to quantify color, lighting and ability to please in portable cameras.
Hi phil,
I am also working as press photographer sometimes – in this case, I look at image quality.
When it comes to camera phones, I go for “ability to please” only – but have not been able to formulate it as clearly as you did
All the best and thank you

dear phil
I look at image quality.
When it comes to camera phone, you can use it
