Palm Pre hits Sprint stores

sprint pre Palm Pre hits Sprint stores
Palm has an excellent loss and IP prevention director, who tends to control leaks from inside the company. Unfortunately, all bets are off the moment the device hits retail stores – the image on the left is from the Twitter feed of a Sprint Shop employee called Jeremy Franklin.

He states the following:

As the device is expected to go live in just a few days, this is normal…hit his feed at the link above for a bit of further info…

Roger McNamee goes bonkers about the Pre

Roger McNamee Roger McNamee goes bonkers about the PreTech CEOs with acting/music production experience obviously have an edge over their MBA competition (think Steve Ballmer). Elevation Partners Roger McNamee is in a similar league.

His hilarious comments about the Pre have made analysts laugh a lot in the past…Palm even had to retract some of them. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough – his latest stunt can be seen at Engadget.

In case anyone of you feels like wasting 2 minutes and a few CPU cycles – definitely hit the link above!

OnBoardC updated to version 2.60

Palm OS handhelds are unique for their capability to compile applications right on them. This feature is made possible by an opensource product called OnBoardC….which unfortunately had some issues in the past.

Fortunately, it looks like the bad times are over – Ryan Rix (who seems to be the new maintainer of the product) has just sent me the following release:

OnBoardC 2.60 has been released here: http://p.sf.net/onboard-ng/downloads

This release is the first official release in the OnBoardC fork OnBoard-NG.

Read about OnBoard-NG here: http://p.sf.net/onboard-ng/news

http://onboard-ng.wikia.com/wiki/About:Fork

Interested in helping?

http://onboard-ng.wikia.com/wiki/Devel:Main_Page#Prospective_Developers

Most wiki pages are still under construction…

This release contains a MUCH UPGRADED SrcEdit, now officially version
2.60 (though the About dialog still references it as 2.51+),
containing, among many other bugfixes, 90% implemented VFS support.
The VFS support is strictly untested!!! All bugs should be submitted
to OnBoard-NG mantis bugtracker: http://p.sf.net/onboard-ng/bugtrack

Please talk back.

P.S. OnBoardC can really be used for developing commercial applications. Consider Tamoggemon Daily Quote a prime example of what can be done…

AT&T will sell the Pre

The Wall Street Journal’s Ben Charny quotes AT&T’s CEO Randaöll Stephenson as follows:

Mr. Stephenson added he sees AT&T selling the Pre after the exclusive arrangement with Sprint expires, and that the recession’s biggest impact has been on the company’s landline phone business.

Nothing to add here…

PalmPreForum.org forced to take videos down

pre videos PalmPreForum.org forced to take videos downBeing hosted outside of the USA is not good if you are a political blog – but if you cover nothing but tech, the Austrian press freedom law essentially has your back covered.

Unfortunately, the boys at PalmPreForum.org are hosted in the USA…which means that they are in the reach of Palm’s excellent loss prevention manager George Cramer. George is considered an expert on canary traps, and is one of the oldest serving members of the loss prevention and anti-frauds industry…and he managed to get the videos taken down:

With that, I sign off – ideas, anyone?

Palm Pre will sync with iTunes

pre itunes Palm Pre will sync with iTunesApple’s iTunes has established itself to be a de-facto standard for all things media – as the Pre is media-centric to some extent, giving it iTunes support would be an excellent idea especially when it comes to wooing iPhone owners.

Palm apparently thought the same – Engadget reports the following:

During Palm’s D7 keynote today in Carlsbad, Paul Cousino showed attendees that non-DRM music, photos and videos could be synced with the Pre via iTunes (on Mac and Windows, naturally). In his words: “It shows up in iTunes just like a regular device.”

Stay tuned!

Palm Pre – tortured on video

pre videos Palm Pre tortured on videoGetting your hands onto the Palm Pre’s SDK is insanely difficult at best – but the boys at the Palm Pre forums seem to be part of Palm’s inner circle.

Their YouTube Channel currently is among the 100 most-viewed of all found on the site…and is so for a good reason: it is chock-full of videos showing almost all aspects of the Pre’s user interface.

Hit the link below if you have Flash installed on your machine and feel like taking a look – it pays:

CDMA Pre – regular price is 850$

Don’t ask me what the folks from Best Buy’s were talking about when they posted the flyer below:
palm pre CDMA Pre regular price is 850$

The device they are selling is a CDMA one…which means that you can’t simply pop in a SIM card from another carrier and get going. Instead, an ESSIN number must be transmitted to the carrier…which is not as easy as it may look as carriers can refuse to activate devices for any reason.

Thus, I guess that this is a price very few individuals will pay…

Sprint leaks webOS gesture guide

pre gesture guide Sprint leaks webOS gesture guideIndustry insiders have frequently feared that Palm would copy Apple’s gesture-based interface 1:1 and thereby give the company an opportunity for a lawsuit.

The latest document leaked via Sprint proves that these fears are not too true: while some gestures are similar (think pinch for zooming), the Pre generally has a completely different gesture language which will probably not be understood by the average iPhone user without consulting the manual.

Whether this is enough to keep Apple from suing is another story – the full scoop can be had here:

Pre Dev Camp: Palm caves in

Giovanni Galluci’s eekers with Palm managed to make the front pages of various news services…and Palm seems to have understood. Their developer blog currently contains the following message:

I’ve had private conversations with a number of predevcamp organizers since Gio’s post yesterday. Gio and I had a very positive conversation this morning. I’ll say the same thing here that I told him and the other organizers:

* Palm supports preDevCamp 100%
* We overreacted to the whole disclosure issue. We’ve been in stealth and super secret mode for so long now, we needed a real world conversation to see how we needed to work things so everybody can operate in their own environment.
* As messy as it feels right now, the passion of the community is incredibly positive

I’m optimistic that we can find a good solution. And we’re going to keep talking. We’d love to get your two cents, concerns, and suggestions — feel free to join the conversation here, and be assured that even when we sometimes have to keep quiet, we’re always listening to your ideas.

Giovanni Galluci furthermore stated the following regarding his motivations for running the camps:

First on the point you made: “I am 100% sure that he didn’t do it for nothing” – I do these events to network. I’ve been organizing and volunteering for events like this (never at this level) for years and I make great friends and business connections with them. So, it is self-serving to the extent that I use it for personal gain on that level. Luckily, everyone involved also benefits the same way.

With that, I feel that there is little more to add – ideas, anyone?
