O’Reilly releases Pre: the missing Manual

O’Reilly seems to have an excellent connection to Palm – they have just announced their next webOS book.

Dubbed “Palm Pre: the missing manual”, the book is intended to act as an “introduction” to all things Pre from an user perspective:

Unfortunately, it looks like jailbreaking has been omitted, which means that the book will have little value for individuals who have used their Pre for some time…

Laptop Burka – or – outdoor readability counts

laptop burka Laptop Burka or outdoor readability countsThe picture on the left shows the so-called Laptop Burka. It was invented by an US electrician called Mark Johnson, who happened to be “fed up with the glare”:

Hey I’m back by popular demand ! Stopping glare on your laptop computer. Providing freedom to the masses ! Pesky Peekers no more mind your own busniess ! Serious latop users go no further .Dont bother with those anti glare filters that dont work ! Enjoy a Laptop Burka in any color ! Laptop Burka works with any laptop anywhere. Light weight easy to carry and store.

Even though I am not sure whether his idea will really capture the masses (purchasable for 20$ off CraigsList), Marc nevertheless should give quite a few manufacturers loads of food for thought.

While glossy screens look great in-doors, it is very hard to beat reflective technology for outdoor use. As devices become more and more mobile, and as temperatures raise….well, you get the idea :) .

Palm C40, P120 pop up at Sprint’s

palm p120 palm c40 Palm C40, P120 pop up at Sprint’sVerizon’s recent leak brought us the product designations P101 and P121: one of them was likely to be the Pre, while the other one was either the Eos or a Windows Mobile box.

PreCentral now got their hands onto the image shown on the left – it reveals a device called P120 and another one which is dubbed C40.

As the P100 (Pre) is also shown above, we can likely assume that the P120 is the Eos and C40 is a Windows Mobile device – let’s see how it all plays out…

Pre: UK release rumored in October

We have known that O2 is Palm’s carrier of choice for the Pre’s UK launch – unfortunately, no information has been available on release dates so far.

Various web sites now quote a new blog called palmwebosblog as follows:

Well, today the silence was finally broken by an anonimous tipster who let us know that O2 managers have been given Palm Pre’s release date by the head office – Friday October 30th.

We will classify this as a rumour but personally I think it is genuine for two reasons: 1) it coincides with O2’s Friday morning releases of big handsets (think iPhone) and 2) remember the original banner on German site of O2 showing October release?

As past statements from O2 Germany have pegged the Pre for October, this sounds reasonable to some extent…but I am a bit weary as the web site is very new. Don’t get me wrong here, but a strong risk element remains: as the site is rather young, the boys could be hard pressed to spread link bait.

Either way, we will find out more soon…

Interview: Berthold Thoma, CEO, Hutchison Austria

1a Interview: Berthold Thoma, CEO, Hutchison AustriaHutchison Austria’s CEO Berthold Thoma is known to be extremely talkative when faced with journalists – the interview below has him talking about a few interesting things.

Before diving into the (translated) interview, let me give you some background information from other sources: this carrier has always invested heavily into smartphones due to their multimedia features. Originally being deep in Microsoft’s camp, they have since moved over to the S60 camp (which makes up for about 30% of the offered handset models). The carrier is known for its great service at affordable prices – here we go:

The Hutchison Group was the first to offer free roaming all over its network. Why that?
At Hutchison’s, we are convinced that having cheap data access all over the world is an integral part of information society. We have realized thiis vision inside our group via the 3LikeHome service.

Of course, there is a business plan behind all of that. Our research has shown that cheap roaming is in demand. Lowering prices causes usage to explode: in the first year, voice usage in 3likehome networks increased by 427 percent, with data usage being multiplied by a factor of 90.

Do you think that we will see further carrier mergers?
The trend has already started. Three of the four Austrian carrieirs are already in international networks, which will consolidate even more on a long term.

Where do you see Windows Mobile in two years?
We currently sell three Windows Mobile handsets. Our business customers love the Exchange integration, and Microsoft furthermore does a great job integrating Live into the OS.

I predict that WM’s market share will raise over the next two years. The main risk IMHO is Android…if it continues to fare as well as it did, it could become a significant competitor.

What do you think about S60
S60 has had some problems staying in line with other OS’s, especially when apps and the web browser are concerned. I wonder which future updates Nokia will deploy in order to remain competitive…

The iPhone is said to dominate the handset market. Do you think that Apple can keep this position?
Apple has caused movement in the handset market, but has since maxed out at a 13 percent smartphone market share…which is not something I call dominance.
Nevertheless: customers benefit from every movement on the market which leads to better handsets.

What do you think about picocells?
In general, these do not pay off financially. However, I can envision them being deployed to cover hot spots like shopping centres….

Will VoIP replace classic voice calls?
VoIP definitely is interesting, especially for customers who are into international calls. Teens furthermore love Skype. Unlike most other carriers, we want to help our customers realize the benefits of these services and thus provide pre-bundled Skype with some of our handsets.

As for VoIP replacing classic calls: unlikely.

Palm’s US marketshare: Centro on its way out, no Pre in sight

Ah, the virtues of AdMob: this mobile web site advertising network provides analysts with extremely interesting reports once a month. Their latest report hits my inbox a few days ago, and contained the following, extremely interesting chart of top US handsets:
us handsets Palms US marketshare: Centro on its way out, no Pre in sight

If we then look at the US handset manufacturer list below, we end up with a margin of 0.4% for all existing Palm OS, Windows Mobile and webOS devices:

From my point of view, the Pre most probably still hasn’t hit the 500kunit margin…

O’Reilly holds Palm WebOS developer webcast

Don’t ask me why, but Palm seems to have outsourced most of its developer marketing for webOS to the boys at O’Reilly’s. They were the first to release a webOS book, and furthermore held a webcast on the topic in the past. This webcast apparently was so successful that another one will be held on the 9th of September:

Tetris, three other apps hit App Catalog

Palm has huge issues with its App Catalog: they still haven’t been able to get a payment system working, and have less than 50 apps available. Thus, every new app is newsworthy – their latest releases are below:

  • Yelp (phone directory)
  • Canadian Press (news app)
  • Tetris demo
  • Yahtzee demo

Even though the demos are unlikely to turn any heads, Tetris is said to be powered by EA mobile: this company has been providing the iTunes app store with loads of apps for some time…

CNBC Business praises Palm

Palm got quite a bit of praise from industry analysts after its first release of the Pre – ever since, press coverage became worse and worse.

Don’t ask me what the folks at Palm’s did, but they just got some praise from CNBC Business:

Striding onto a Las Vegas stage in January wearing a mile-wide smile and a bright orange shirt, Matías Duarte, announced he would “not do a magic show”. Yet minutes later the jaws of those attending the press conference at the annual Consumer Electronics Show were hanging as if Siegfried & Roy had just made a white tiger vanish.

Mac OS 10.6 loses HotSync conduit

Even though Palm has given up on Mac OS quite some time ago, the Cupertinians have been hard at work to keep the devices connected to one another.

Unfortunately, these times seem to be over – AppleInsider reports the following:

Apple has discontinued support for legacy Palm OS devices in Mac OS X Snow Leopard’s iSync 3.1.0, according to sources familiar with the latest Gold Master build, requiring users of Palm OS devices to obtain third party support for syncing their Palm Desktop information with Mac OS X’s Sync Services.

If this really happens, our former partners Mark/Space will host a big fiest – their product will sell significantly faster for the foreseeable future…

News from Dmitry Grinberg’s operating system

Don’t ask me what Dmitry Grinberg was drinking when he had the idea to create an operating system of his own (an impossible task for a single person). Nevertheless, he still seems to be motivated – the latest entry to his blog reads as follows:
