Well folks, it looks like I finally made it – a German Palm Pre has landed onto my desk via a source who demanded strictest anonymity. I thus have some time to review the box now – can it stack up?

The box of the Pre shows a radical departure from past Palm designs. It is extremely small:

Removing the lid reveals the device:

Below it, a poster with ‘getting started’ hints can be found:

Remove it to get your hands onto the headset, charger, data cable and pouch:

Unfortunately, a Pre doesn’t do much without a SIM card. However, the SIM insertion animation is pretty slick:

In the end, my first impressions are mixed. The unit does have an intriguing, beautiful industrial design – but is let down by the lack of a proper keyboard. One clearly sees that its core intent is entertainment – more soon…

  1. Tam, I’m a bit confused. The German Palm Pre’s been out for a while now. What’s more, there is a slide-out keyboard built in.

  2. Hi Suman,
yes, I know about the keyboard – and I will cover it seperately soon!

I also know that I am a bit behind here – but I felt better late than never!

  3. I would put the lid on that box and ship it back if I were you. I’ve had “a” pre for almost a year. Since using the phone, I’ve gone through 4. OS runs great, ap upgrade is pheonominal, ease of use- terriffic. Problem is the speakers have only been lasting an average of 3 mos top. And that’s not full volume constant media play. Just from ringing. Educated and experienced advice? Wait until august for the HTC evo. 4g, HD, research it. I’ll live with no sound for 2 months for the upgrade.

  4. Hi Ed,
rest assured that I won’t trade in any of my phones ;) .

  5. not sure what ed is talking about the vast majority of these phones work just fine, and it is a first generation phone afterall so it should come as no surprise that some units ARE defective…as can be expected of the evo..

i’ve had mine for almost a year and it works better and better after each update. the phone is fun to use and fun to learn about.

and there is a slide-out ‘proper’ keyboard

  6. Hi Chris,
ok, ok – I will cover the keyboard tomorrow.

As for the issues Ed descriobes: I have not seen any on MY pre. But I had a Tungsten T3, which was exchanged four times…

    Tam
