When Palm shipped the T5, many believed it to have been a rechristened Palm TE or TE2. The appearance of the two devices was extremely similar after all, even though the T5 turned out to be a bit longer.

An individual from evilgeniusstudio now claims to have purchased the device pictured below:

  1. Looks like the Palm TX to me. Also the back label seems to indicate a Tungsten X as in the TX . Maybe the TX was not ready and so they released a different model as a T5? I’m not an insider though.

  2. Nice preproduction unit…

Regarding the sticker: It already contains the FCC-ID of the T5 and looks exactly like the T5/Angus-model submitted to the FCC (also had the X on it)

The shown device shows the buttons of the T5.

Most interesting: Even if the front labeling states “Tungsten E”, the back cover is obviously the one of the T5, just see the holes not available on the TE.

I’d say it is the T5 body and just branded as a TE model, difficult to really judge the actual dimensions in the picture.

    Nice unit though…

  3. Might be a real T5-Prototype. The Print “Tungsten|E” on the front cover does not mean anything – I’ve seen a T|T3 that had a “Tungsten|E”-Laben up front.

You should cover the serial-number. I don’t know anyting about the NDA’s for the T5 but the person that got this device from Palm might get into trouble if he sold a device he’s not supposed to even talk about in public :-(

  4. Hi Folks,
if I can recall correctly, the rumor at the time was that the LifeDrive was intended to become the T3, whereas the thing which came as T5 was intended to become the TE2.

But, as said, I am not an insider either…

    All the best

  5. The LifeDrive was supposed to become the “Tungsten X”. The first LD I’ve seen hat “Tungsten X” printed on the case rather than “Lifedrive”. The Device-ID of the LifeDrive still reflects that (it’s “TunX”)

  6. Oh, and I nearly forgot that: The Device-ID of the E2 is “Zir4″. I leave it to your imagination, what name that “Zir” could be ;-)

(BTW: The Zire 31 was intended to be sold as Zire 22 – at least that’s what the device-ID (“Zi22″) indicates…)

  7. Hi OWL,
the day when you share all your knowledge, I want to be close by with a note pad ;) .

    Thanks for talking back!
