We have heard about Palm’s upcoming Topaz tablet in the past – so far, we didn’t get any specs.

This has now changed, with Reg Hardware contributing the following:

CPU is a 1.2GHz ARM-based boy from Qualcomm, though it is dual core. The tablet’s screen is an iPad-like 9.7in, 1024 x 768 IPS

Memory: 512MB of DDR 2. Storage: 16-64GB of Flash, … 1.3MP front-facing camera

As the device is said to hit the road on the 9th of February, we will know more soon – stay tuned for further info as we get it!

mobile world congress Mobile World Congress 4 possible host cities leftMobile World Congress is a huge event – unfortunately, the event management team in Barcelona has been a bit overwhelmed at times.

Some time ago, the GSMA announced plans to relocate. Mobile Business Briefing now reports the following:

The GSMA today announced that Barcelona, Milan, Munich and Paris are now battling to become the host city of the Mobile World Congress for a five-year period from 2013 through 2017.

Cologne and Amsterdam are now out – stay tuned for further info as we get it…

The people at Hewlett-Packard have hit the ball on the spot by announcing that there are more tablets than Engadget has revealed. In fact, sometime earlier, Engadget had told the world about the upcoming WebOS tablets from HP (Goddammit. why does every company copy another?? Don’t they have to bring out their own next-gen stuff??).

palm webos tablets leak More tablets to come than expected : HP

Code-named “Topaz” and “Opal”, two WebOS-powered tablets will reportedly be available globally in both 9″ and 7″ screen sizes respectively. A screen shot of an internal marketing plan reveals a solid and varied lineup of WebOS tablets, arriving in wi-fi, 3G and LTE 4G variants for both Verizon and AT&T. Somewhat tragically, however, the given retail availability of these tablets is not expected until September of this year, placing them well behind Apple’s iPad followup, RIM’s Playbook and the flood of Honeycomb-powered Android 3.0 tablets expected over the course of the year.

From a hardware standpoint, the renderings look similar to the bevy of black slab-like tablets currently on the market, albeit with a very high-gloss finish adorning the backside of the device, giving the tablets an aesthetic touch far more reminiscent of HP’s PC line than Palm’s traditional use of soft-touch rubberized coatings. A front-facing camera does appear to be present and no physical buttons adorn the exterior of the device aside from what may possibly be a volume rocker on the top corner. The traditional gesture area resides below the screen, as does the pseudo-button first seen on the Palm Pre Plus last year. From the screen image shown in the render, WebOS also looks surprisingly unmodified in its transition from smartphone to tablet. Finally, the “Palm” branding is still thankfully present on the leaked images, though this very well could change come production time. Engadget has updated their original piece to say that both devices will be powered by an unspecified 1.2Ghz processor, with no word on storage capacity or whether or not the CPU is a single or a dual-core.

The wi-fi version is specifically mentioned as targeting US retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon. Curiously, there is no mention at all of any Sprint version, which partially debunks the earlier rumors of a big Sprint WiMax tablet launch to coincide with the 2 year anniversary of the original Pre, though Sprint could still receive an upcoming WebOS smartphone.

Stay tuned for more…!!

We have always seen the indulging texter (or e-mailer) so immersed in the device who pays no heed even if an atom bomb is on the way at 125mph. Please see for yourself.

Ouch…!!

Now with MS giving out similar ads where people get so absorbed in their phones that they bump into anything imaginable, seems like MS was correct after all.

PS: At Tamoggemon, we are always concerned about your safety. Hence, we request you to avoid texting or e-mailing on the move…!!

“Hey Tam, My N8 battery just died, do you have a Charger?”

“No, I have an iPhone and it’s charger won’t fit into your N8.”

“Damn..!! Simon, Do you have one?”

“Sorry Mate, I own a Pre.”

Very soon, conversations like this would be long forgotten myths. As a common charger for all data-enabled mobile phones (Read as Smartphones) is on it’s way in the year 2011, thanks to the European Union, whose tireless efforts have paved way for the standardization of chargers for “all data enabled phones sold in the EU.” This is very impressive considering all the users, corporations and Holy Mother Earth herself.

We came across a recent publication of the newly defined charging standards for the EU, which has finally agreed to Micro-USB chargers as the standard chargers to be used in the future.

“Incompatibility of chargers for mobile phones is a major inconvenience for users and leads to an unnecessary waste of resources” says Antonio Tajani, European Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship.

Covering all data-enabled mobile phones sold in the 27 EU Member States, including smartphones, the agreement paved the way for European Standardisation Bodies CEN-CENELEC and ETSI to issue a set of standards on interoperability, safety and electro-magnetic emissions. With these standards in place, the EU Commission now expects the first generation of mobile phones compatible with the new common charger to hit our shelves in early 2011.

Well thats a sigh of relief for the EU consumers, who are on the receiving end of this immediate benefit (yes sirs and ma’ams, you dont just get a standardized charger, you get a God-damned High Efficiency Charger…!!). What has been speculated and discussed for long has now come into the picture.

It is estimated that approximately half of all mobile phones in use across the EU will benefit immediately, with the EU initiative having huge potential to spread to other electronic devices and world regions.

“Our lives will change for the better thanks to the harmonised charger system, and I think that it will inevitably expand to additional technological devices,” : Vice President Tajani.

PS: We just received a phone call from Holy Mother Earth herself, she is eternally grateful to these good EU members and the companies who have relieved her of some 51,000 tomes of yearly charger wastes. She hopes similar announcements would happen across the globe with imminence.

She also tell us that she will be more productive and green in Europe this summer..!!

Whatdy’all say..??

Traditionally, Palm, BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Phone heads got their software from electronic software distributors. They – obviously – didn’t like the advent of manufacturer stores. MobiHand managed to adapt itself rather quickly.

PalmGear and Handango chose to combat the changing tides by ganging up – but two zeros do not make a one when banded together. This was best shown by their inability to unify the developer’s backends for literally ages…

The latest announcement from the boys reads as following:

2011 is already shaping up to be a monumental year. We have many exciting announcements we will share over the coming weeks including new distribution channels we are launching, new revenue generating opportunities, and new services for content providers.

To begin the new year, we will be introducing significant improvements to the PocketGear developer portal. Our first milestone of 2011 will be the launch of a unified, single developer portal for all PocketGear-powered storefronts. No longer will you have to go to both the Handango and PocketGear developer portals to get your content out to all of our channels. We will now truly be a one-stop shop.

Our response is a barely audible yawn – but given that today is a slow news day, well, ;)

Manufacturer-owned stores have changed the approach to marketing your app – but some basic laws still apply.

A PR agency called iPhoneAppPublicity.com recently shared the following “checklist of application promotion”. It is focused on iPhone, but also applies to most other platforms:

1. Is your name catchy like ’20 Minute Meals’ or ‘Doodle Jump’ both winners of Apple’s Design Awards? If not, consider renaming your app so it can be found more easily in Google searches and in the App Store.
2. Include and promote content in your app that cannot be found anywhere else.
3. Offer a free download to newspaper columnists, technical and non-technical alike.
4. Send out a well-written press release to the media announcing your new app and its special features no one can do without.
5. Use free online press release distribution. It’s a great way to access trade pubs, blogs, and consumer magazines.
6. Get a launch sponsor and co-promote. Hook up with a company that could benefit from being associated with this app.
7. Create a demonstration video and place it on your own YouTube channel.
8. Distribute the demo video online using free services like TubeMogul.
9. Create a tune or license one to play along with your YouTube video 10. Offer a free trial for users with an upgrade path to the paid version.
11. Host an App Launch Party for the media, friends, family and prospects. Give em all a take away flyer, card etc.
12. Get friends and business associates who are well-versed on your app to create a buzz by posting on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.
13. Set up a Facebook Fan page to showcase your app. It’s free and easy and your fan page can be found in search engines.
14. Create wallpaper with rows of your app’s icon and use it on your profile pages in Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
15. Within your app, create Twitter and Facebook update features so users can easily post comments on their social network about how great your app is.
16. Participate in Q&A forums online, such as WikiAnswers and Yahoo Answers.
17. Get listed in free online directories such as DMOZ.
18. Place free classified ads on Craigslist.
19. Create your own blog and post an announcement about your new app or about a feature update to your app.
20. Get reviews of your app placed at such sites as AppStoreApps.com, the Apple iPhone Apps blog, AppSafari, 148apps.com, AppCraver, iPhone Application List, AppShopper and AppRater.
21. Use the services of prMac an excellent way to get the word out to the Apple universe.

Even though much of it is straightforward, getting a reminder from time to time can be more than helpful…

Seems like a developer should be a bonded labor who should be paid no wages, made to pay his bills on his own, and spending scores of hours to create wonderful apps which everyone wants for FREE…!! Mathew Inman drew this idea subtly into humor (I will refer to it as black humor).

Please enjoy…

5 Irony of a developers life...

Please share your views to win cool stuff…!!

There were once an ancient time when people innovated something, chewed on it for some time, and then invented something new. Gone are those days. Shame…!! With Bluetooth 3.0 Just coming out in mass production, we already have Bluetooth 4.0.
You read it correct gentlemen, the good guys at Atheros (sounds familiar..eh?) have successfully announced the AR6233, the first of its kind chip in the whole world to bring “the first SIP solution to support the new Bluetooth 4.0 standard,”. The SIP (it’s called system in package and should not be read as some important points…!!) houses a 802.11n “with a near-zero impact on the battery life of portable devices.” Alongwith the Bluetooth 4.0 thingy. The best part is that it is very feasible on the x86 architecture and is supposed to be mass produced sometime in the shady future (Read as Q2 2011).

For those who want to go word by word, here is what the Press release from Athero Says:

“Atheros Debuts Industry’s Most Flexible Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 Solution for Tablets and Portable Consumer Electronic Devices

The new AR6233 offers both 802.11n Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.0 technologies on a system-in-package (SIP) solution.

San Jose, CA — Atheros Communications, Inc., a global leader in innovative technologies for wireless and wired communications, today unveiled the industry’s highest-performing and most flexible wireless solution for tablets and portable consumer electronic (CE) devices. Extending Atheros’ popular line of combination products for computing and consumer devices, the new AR6233 offers both 802.11n Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.0 technologies on a system-in-package (SIP) solution — the compact form factor preferred for CE designs.

Key Facts:

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are becoming standard features in more portable consumer devices, including tablets, handheld games and media players. Wi-Fi provides fast network connections for downloading and sharing digital content, while Bluetooth enhances the usability of devices with simple connections to wireless keyboards, mice, headsets and computers.
  • The AR6233 is built on the Atheros ROCm® architecture, which was designed to meet the stringent performance and power requirements of mobile handsets. As a result, the new solution can offer the highest 1-stream 802.11n performance (up to 85 Mbps of end-user throughput) with a near-zero impact on the battery life of portable devices. The AR6233 is also the first SIP solution to support the new Bluetooth 4.0 standard, which features a low-energy mode to extend Bluetooth connectivity to sensors and other battery-powered devices.
  • With a skyrocketing number of Wi-Fi devices crowding the 2.4GHz band, more consumers are looking for dual-band products that leverage the 5GHz band for media applications requiring relatively interference-free bandwidth. The AR6233 provides a cost-effective way for manufacturers to add dual-band wireless capabilities, by adding a minimal number of components to their design.
  • As CE manufacturers launch tablets and other connected devices with unique capabilities and price points, they are using a variety of processors, interfaces and operating systems. Atheros is the only connectivity vendor to support the full range of tablet platforms, enabling customers to streamline their development and procurement processes. With the addition of the AR6233, Atheros’ portfolio now supports architectures that use:
  1. ARM® or x86 processors
  2. SDIO, PCIe and USB interfaces for WLAN, and UART and USB interfaces for Bluetooth
  3. Windows®, Android™ and other Linux® operating systems
  • The AR6233 provides the best possible Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance in a variety of form factors. The same solution can be used in larger devices that take advantage of isolation between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, as well as smaller devices that share a single-antenna for both radios. To minimize interference in both cases, the AR6233 uses Atheros Universal Wireless Cooperation™ technology, which facilitates greater cooperation between the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios.
  • The AR6233 is now sampling, and is expected to be in volume production in Q2, 2011.”

The list is out for the last month of the year. This holiday season, Nokia unexpectedly (or rather expectedly) fell from the 60% last month to 40% this month. Quite interestingly, the HTC folks have grabbed up an extra 10% of the spots with 30% share and HTC HD2 making a strong jump from the 6th to the 3rd place, displacing the Galaxy S to the 9th spot.

1. (1) Apple iPhone 4

2. (2) Nokia 3720 Classic

3. (6) HTC HD2

4. (7) Nokia E52

5. (5) Nokia N8

6. (10) HTC Desire HD

7. (-) HTC Wildfire

8. (-) Samsung Galaxy tab

9. (9) Nokia 6303 Classic

10. (-) Samsung I9000 Galaxy S

() = Last month’s position.

Samsung Galaxy Tab makes it into Krusell’s Top seller list. iPhone 4´s first place during the Christmas period, is probably no surprise to the market says Ulf Sandberg CEO at Krusell. Most impressing is that the Samsung Galaxy Tab did enter the list, and that it actually made a better position than its sibling from Samsung, the smart phone Galaxy S.

The Swedish manufacturer of carrying cases for portable electronics, Krusell, releases its “Top 10″-list for December 2010. The list is based on the number of pieces of custom made mobile and smart phone cases ordered from Krusell during December 2010. Krusell’s list is unique due to the fact that it reflects the sales of phones in six continents and in more than 70 countries around the globe.

Getting data on platform performance is difficult – very few developers cover all relevant platforms.

TechCrunch now shared the chart below, which looks at the downloads of an app called Flixster over Christmas:
image002 Flixter app downloads on a per platform level

Of course, this is but one developer (and does not cover Symbian, Palm webOS or bada) – folks, how does your data look?
